Process_Description: Bridge locations were obtained from the New York State Department of Transportation's (NYSDOT) New York Bridges data set, in ArcView shapefile format. All attributes except BIN (bridge identification number) were removed from the data set. Bridge locations were adjusted, based on the 1991 Tompkins County Digital Planimetric Base Map series. New bridges near "the octopus" were not included in the original NYSDOT data set, so they and their BINs were added based on field work. The Tompkins County Highway Department provided maintenance responsibility information as well as whether each bridge was open or closed or no longer in use. This information was incorporated into the attribute table. Coordinates for the New York State Plane Central Feet 1983 North American Datum were added for each bridge by using the sample "addxy" script included with ArcView.
