that significant changes in land use, soil classification, soil
interpretations, and standards and procedures for making soil surveys

Field procedures for the second order soil
survey included plotting of soil boundaries determined by field
observation and by interpretation of remotely sensed data.
Boundaries were verified at closely spaced intervals, and the
soils in each delineation were identified by traversing and
transecting the landscape. Soil scientists described and
sampled the soils, analyzed samples in the laboratory and
statistically analyzed the data. The classification and map
unit names were finalized at the final correlation in 1986.

The USDA, Soil Conservation Service (SCS), National Cartographic
Center prepared half-tone film positive base maps for compilation
purposes. This base map was made by first preparing an enlaged
screened negative from orthophotoquadrangle products produced by
the U.S. Geological Survey from National High Altitude Program
photography. The negatives were enlarged from 1:24000 to 1:12000.
In addition, the negatives were reformatted to one-twelfth
quadrangle size. The screened negatives, called half-tone negatives,
were then photographically reproduced as positives on stable-base
material.

soil polygons were traced on the gel coat using a scribing tool.
The scribing procedure was completed by vendors that contracted
with the USDA-SCS National Cartographic Center, Fort Worth,
Texas. A clear film positive was then made from the scribed
tracing at The National Cartographic Center using photographic

The clear film positives were scanned
by Frontennac Designs, Trumansburg, New York. The scan files
were processed using LT Plus software. The one-twelfth
quadrangle formatted scanned data were joined in the digitizing
software using a 1:24000 quadrangle as a template. The
Peekskill, West Point, and parts of the Mohegan Lake, and
Oscawana Lake quadrangles were recompiled to 1:24000 stable
base USGS topographic maps. The soil survey data that were
compiled to the USGS topographic maps were then hand digitized
directly to these compiled maps using LT4X software. The files
from the LT Plus scanning were matched to the files produced
by directly digitizing from the compiled data using LT4X.
LT Plus and LT4X data files were exported to GRASS 4.13 beta
version and Digital Line Graph optional format files were
produced. The digital data were reviewed by the Natural
Resources Conservation Service, National Cartography and Geospatial
Center staff for adherence to SSURGO standards in 1997. The
data was then returned to New York for corrections.

was sent to the Wisconsin Digitizing Unit from Cornell for SSURGO

of SSURGO Evaluation, new DLGs were written from ARC/INFO and were
rechecked with the aforementioned AML's. The new DLGs were processed

The Michigan Digitizing Unit (MIDU) staff downloaded the SSURGO data
for Putnam County, New York and the adjacent surveys from the Soil
Data Warehouse (SDW). The MIDU staff checked the spatial data with
the ARCGIS Version 9.2 software. To remove excess vertices, the soil
boundaries were generalized at a 1.0 meter tolerance. The boundaries
of this soil survey were adjusted to match the adjacent soil surveys
at the 0.1 meter tolerance. After the soil survey was edited, the
area, line and point feature classes were converted to ARC/INFO
coverages and exported as e00 files. The seamless coverages were
checked using the July 2009 SSURGO Evaluation AML programs. The
labels in the spatial data matched the symbols in the mapunit table
from NASIS. Upon successful completion of the SSURGO Evaluation,
the county coverages, feature file and the metadata were
electronically transferred to the NRCS Staging Server to be joined
with the tabular data.

The spatial data for Putnam County, New York soil survey area was
downloaded from the Soil Data Mart on October 15, 2012. The individual
shapefiles were appended into a geodatabase for region 12. The data were
processed in ARCGIS 10.1 using a topology object with a 0.1 meter cluster
tolerance for the purpose of eliminating gaps and overlaps within the
region 12 soils geodatabase. Individual soil survey area data were
exported as shapefiles from the regional geodatabase. A datum
transformation from NAD83 to WGS84 using the NAD_1983_To_WGS_1984_1 datum
transformation method was applied to the data. The data were checked with
the SSURGO Evaluation scripts provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture,
Natural Resources Conservation Service. The shapefiles were then uploaded
to the soil data warehouse for archival and distribution.
