Abstract:
Purpose: Election districts determine representation in local, county, state, and national governments. Election District 2002 data set reflects the redistricting process that took place in 2001 and is based on the corrected in 2001 Tompkins County Census data.
Supplemental_Information: The County, State, and national election districts are derived from the local (Town/Village/City) election districts.

Process_Step:
Process_Description: Election districts are legally defined by local, county, and state governments after each national census, through a process known as redistricting. To create the Election Districts data set, the various legal resolutions and maps were gathered for the towns, City of Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York State, and United States. The district boundaries for the local (towns and City) election districts were created first, using the 1991 Tompkins County Digital Planimetric Base Map and the 2001 Tompkins County tax parcel data set. Attributes for the local election districts were then populated with the appropriate County, State, and Federal election district identifiers. Next, the County election districts (also known as legislative districts), the State Assembly and State Senate, and the US Senate and US House of Representative districts were created as regions, using the REGIONDISSOLVE command in Arc/Info.
