Description:
Abstract: Various county departments, local municipal agencies, and other not-for-profit organizations have identified the need for a digital soil coverage data set for Tompkins County, NY. The Tompkins County ITS GIS Division initiated and developed a digital soil coverage from the official analog soil map series produced and published by the United States Geology Survey (USGS) and Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station. The field survey has been conducted during the 60es.
Purpose: To provide a GIS countywide coverage that consists of polygons defining the soils boundaries and to add enough basic attributes to achieve a fundamental degree of categorization. Open, all-purpose data set.
Supplemental_Information: The field survey took place during the 60es and it has been published in a book titled: Soil Survey, Tompkins County NY, in 1965. Please refer to this book for more information regarding soil science. Attribute information can be found in an attached Soilsdef.DBF and SOILSDEF.TXT filesPrevious versions of Tompkins County Soil Associations in CUGIR include: <http://cugir2.mannlib.cornell.edu/buckets/Display.jsp?id=1631>

Data_Quality_Information

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Assessed using the scanned source maps as background images in order to review the polygons attribute SOILNAME against the soil maps symbols (see "Source" and "Status" fields under Attribute Information).
Logical_Consistency_Report: Be aware of the initial error introduced by the source materials (see "Source Information") the data source is from the 60es and changes may have occurred. The horizontal positional accuracy has been assessed against data sets derived from 1991 Tompkins County Planimetric Series (see "Horizontal Positional Accuracy"). Data were geo-referenced using ER Mapper image-processing software (method: polynomial rectification using ground control points).
Completeness_Report: Complete for Tompkins County.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: AVERAGE offset in feet is 38.9 Using the National Standart for Spatial Data Accuracy, the data set tested 70 feet horizontal accuracy at 95% confidence level.

Process_Step:
Process_Description: Three main phases 1. Data geo-referencing and data extraction using ER Mapper software. 2. Vectorization and polygon topology using ESRI software. 3. Using a control data set with known higher accuracy to assess the soil coverage positional accuracy. Control data set: Road Centerline Arc coverage from 1991 Tompkins County Digital Planimetric Series. Using the road intersections as control points. Measuring the X and Y values from both data sets (the tested data set and the control data set). Statistic calculations based on the Accuracy Statistic Worksheet provided in the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy handbook.

SOILNAME The first capital letter is the initial one of the soil name. A second capital letter, A, B, C, D, E or F, shows the slope. A fort letter, capital K in a symbol shows that the slope is complex. Some simbols without a slope letter are for nearly level soils or land types, but others are for soils or land types that have a considerable range in slope. A final number, 3, in the symbol shows that the soil is eroded. Attribute information can be found in an attached Soilsdef.DBF and SOILSDEF.TXT files coded values
Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: The data set contains of soil boundary polygons with label points. Each polygon defines a soil type represented by a symbol assigned in SOILNAME field.
