Description:
Abstract: This dataset delineates impervious surfaces within the
Cayuga Lake Watershed. However, the current dataset is limited
to Cayuga County. These polygons were digitized from aerial
imagery from 2003, using a combination of automatic and manual
methods.
Purpose: This geographic dataset was developed by the Cayuga Lake
Watershed Network as part of a larger project, in conjunction
with Dr. Douglas Haith and Cornell University, to model nutrient
loading in the Cayuga Lake watershed. The model used is the
Generalized Watershed Loading Function (Haith and Shoemaker,
1987). Haith, D.A. and L.L. Shoemaker, 1987. Generalized
Watershed Loading Functions for Stream Flow Nutrients. Water
Resources Bulletin, 23(3), pp. 471-478.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Mapping impervious surfaces by manual digitization may
provide the most accurate geospatial data. For regions in which
impervious surfaces have been mapped, the accuracy of the
geospatial data is expected to be extremely high.
Logical_Consistency_Report: unknown
Completeness_Report: Includes impervious areas within the intersection of the
Cayuga Lake Watershed and Cayuga County.

Process_Step:
Process_Description: Impervious areas were digitized from NYSDOP aerial
imagery using the ArcGIS Feature Analyst extension. A
representative sample of all impervious surface types was
manually digitized. This training set was provided as input
for Feature Analyst feature extraction model using
recommended model parameters. Simple visual analysis of the
impervious surface geospatial data layers generated using
the Feature Analyst software extension indicated that the
error rates far exceeded any acceptable levels. Thus,
time-consuming manual digitization was used to modify the
feature extraction dataset by adding missed impervious
surface areas and eliminating pervious areas misclassified
as impervious.
