Abstract: This point dataset represents trees on the Cornell University main campus in Ithaca, New York as of 2012.

Purpose: The dataset provides an inventory of trees in the non-natural areas of the main Cornell Campus. This inventory can be used to support studies of species diversity, tree size and health, risks of invasive pests, and carbon sequestration.

Completeness_Report: The tree inventory covers the main area of the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, New York. It omits natural areas, areas maintained by the City of Ithaca, and the Cornell Plantations' Botanical Garden and Arboretum.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Most locations were collected with a consumer-grade GPS unit (3-5m accuracy), and rectified to 2007 orthoimagery (4ft accuracy). In isolated GPS "dead zones", locations were sketched on a map and later rectified to orthoimagery. All final tree locations are estimated to be at least within 3m accuracy.

Process_Description: Tree locations were collected using a Garmin 60CSx handheld GPS unit, and rectified to the 2007 Tompkins County NYS Orthophotos. In areas lacking a clear GPS signal ("dead zone"), locations were sketched on paper maps and later digitized and rectified to the NYS Orthophotos. Some trees had already been inventoried in prior surveys, and were re-inventoried and checked for accuracy. (Information from prior surveys may be found in the comments fields.)
